Apart From The School (1979)

Apart From the School

This exhibition was reviewed by the Times Educational Supplement (23.11.79) as: “Apart from the School… is the section contributed by the Cockpit’s Schools’ Photography Project. This is an exercise in the meaning of style, where a group of fifth-year pupils explored their identification with particular styles, among them mods, rastas, teds, and punks. The result is a visual identity chart and a composite of photographs that serve as pointers to the cultural meanings expressed through clothes and gestures. The exhibition consists of 16 laminated card panels (approx. 34 in x 24 in) and in a case.

Apart from the School was one of the pilots for the Cockpit’s Schools Photography Project It was made by pupils at Michael Ramsey School in Camberwell in 1979 with two members of the Cockpit’s staff. It was described in Schooling and Culture Issue 6 in Autumn 1979, as concerning Youth Sub-Culture and Identity and used charts, montage and portraiture to look at youth styles.

It was made into an exhibition which was advertised as available for hire in Schooling and Culture Issue 8 in the summer of 1980. It was then withdrawn from touring and parts of it joined the Work in Progress exhibition.
