Approaches to Urban Education
An exhibition originally shown in two parts presents a range of work in the fields of community involvement, curriculum development and political action in response to the economic decline and urban deprivation of inner-city areas. One section of the exhibition, entitled “Confronting the Crisis” and presented by the ILEA’S Centre for Urban Educational Studies, centres on the urban school and its place in the social landscape, school closures and the relationship between school and industry. It explores four elements – schooling, the city, education, and economic decline – through photographs and text. Another section, a guide to the work of the Nottingdale Urban Studies Centre, London, offers detailed examples of curriculum development centres on an active relationship with the local community. Panels document planning, housing, local oral history projects and the use of the Schools Council Sensory Trail for primary children.
The exhibition consists of 16 panels (approx. 32 in x 22 in) and 16 panels (30 in x 20 in) and case and can be supplied with issue 5 of Schooling and Culture journal which concentrates on the theme of urban education and school closures.
