Changing Attitudes Towards the Young Offender: Sarah McCarthy (22 Jan – 19 Feb 1981)

Changing Attitudes Towards the Young Offender

This exhibition by Sarah McCarthy aims to portray the juvenile ‘offender’ and the response to ‘delinquency’ from the various agencies involved, such as the police, magistrates, and social services, with particular reference to the 1969 Children and Young Persons Act. The first section looks at the way the delinquent is represented to the lay public; this is followed by a brief history of juvenile law, from the establishment of separate jurisdiction for children, up to the 1969 Act. The final section is a survey of the various types of provisions made in response to ‘delinquency’ based on interviews and visits to institutions in the Newcastle Upon Tyne locality.

27 panels approx 36″ x 20″ and case.
