Leavers Believers: Philip Cohen & Adrian Chappell (20 June – 14 July 1983)

Questioning Official Transactions by Cockpit No Kidding project

An exhibition which looks at some of the problems facing early school leavers, and some of the problems facing them. It is a reconstruction of the image/text panels designed by school students as part of a course which involved them in making taped interviews, photographic records, and discussions. There are three main sections to this exhibition. (1) A series of panels in which each student built up a ‘personal portrait of people, places, and activities which were significant to them. (2) Panels showing the students’ responses to the variety of workplaces and training sites which they visited. (3) A final section, which includes photo stories, where the students express ways of dealing with their predicament which is very different from those proposed by the official agencies.

An exhibition, produced by the Cockpit Cultural Studies Department, highlights some of the problems facing early school-leavers. Seen through their own experiences, the exhibition considers how school-leavers make comparisons between officially prescribed routes out of school and their own ‘unofficial’ options.
