Schooling and Culture and Northchurch Publishing Project

Sniffin Glue was a story made by pupils in 1982 as part of their school work. It was put together with the help of Steve Miller, ILEA teacher at the Northchurch Day Care Centre with the help of John Steggel at the Charles Chaplin Centre.
SCAG A Short Story about Heroin was a fictional drama made by pupils as part of their school work in 1983. They were students at the Northchurch Day Care Centre who had been doing photography for a year. Steve Miller helped them produce the photo story with the support of John Steggel at the Charles Chaplin Centre.

Staying on…
All the material in this booklet results from a two-term teaching project. Through the school’s English Department eleven girls were released from their normal timetables for one morning a week. Using cameras and tape-recorders as means for recording experiences and opinions, the project offered the group a framework for exploring relationships between different areas of their lives. This began by looking at careers and work experience, then broadened to examine the many pressures being exerted through school and family upon the options available to the girls.
Three ILEA organisations have been involved in this production: the girls’ comprehensive school, the Cockpit Cultural Studies Department and the Peckham Urban Studies Centre. We are grateful for the support given by Ann Munroe, head of the school’s English Department and to Colin St Leger for permitting us to use additional photographs (pp 11,13,14,15). Last but by no means least, we would like to thank all the girls who took part.
In addition to this publication, “Staying On” is available as a touring exhibition through the ILEA’S Cockpit Gallery. An account of the original teaching project which describes the rationale and method is published in “Cultural Studies in Secondary Schools” obtainable through the Cockpit Gallery.
“NO KIDDING PUBLISHING PROJECT”: “Staying On” is one of a series of exhibitions and publications which aim to represent young people’s perceptions of school to work transitions. Further information is available directly from the Project (c/o Post 16 Centre, Institute of Education, Bedford Way, WC1) or through the Cockpit Gallery (405 5334).

Listen to all they say
Written by Louisa Lasdun, a secondary school music teacher, “Listen To All They Say” is about some of the experiences of girls’ music-making in mixed schools. These experiences are then focussed through the story of a group of girls – “Dolls House” – who formed a band after they left school. These four girls produced their own booklet and an exhibition. “Listen To All They Say” is a teacher-focussed sequel to “Dolls House”.
Together, “Listen To All They Say” and “Dolls House” present a complementary picture of girls’ experiences and teaching strategies which aim to confront prejudice by building girls’ confidence in their own abilities.
“Listen To All They Say” is one of a series of publications published through “No Kidding”. Further details from the Post 16 Centre, University of London Institute of Education, Bedford Way, London WC1.
We would like to thank Ann, Chris, Val and Steph for their collaboration on this project.
