Out of the Art Studies work grew the Schools Photography Project. The pilot year ran from 1978-79.
In the summer term of 1978 the department ran a one week project called The Photograph. An analysis of it was given as a lecture and written up in Photography Class and Schooling by Andrew Dewdney and Martin Lister in March 1980.

The department invited teachers to collaborate with them in using photography across the curriculum. These first photography based projects were described in Photography Class and Schooling.

In May 1980 Photography in Education was produced by the ILEA Curriculum Working Party No.3. It included articles by the Cockpit Team which covered the background to their ideas, a reading list and a write-up of the photography projects at different institutions.

Schools Photography Project Work in Progress 78 – 81 was the catalogue of an exhibition held in 1981 which had 101 panels. The 15 organisations that they worked with were listed on the inside page.

The exhibition took place from 29 June to 3 July 1981

Some of the work that was later made into the gallery touring shows grew from this project.

Andrew Dewdney and Martin Lister wrote about the Schools Photography Project in 1986 in Photography Politics Two.
